Green Drinks 3rd June

GREEN DRINKS is a worldwide networking event that is held monthly in over 460 towns and cities. It brings together people that work on or are learning about clean tech, renewable energy and efficiency, non toxic living, sustainability and the environment. It’s an opportunity to get to know fellow residents, environmental business people, professionals, educators and people interested in learning how to become more self sufficient.

“WONDERFUL WINTER TIPS ON DESIGNING YOUR HOME FOOD GARDEN” – lessons learnt by food gardeners in Hout Bay.
Talfryn and Kirsten will share what they have learned about the pre-conditions for successful organic home food gardening. Aimed at people who are PLANNING a new food garden or RE-DESIGNING an existing one. Winter is a good time to do that. Info on what factors to consider, so you can start with a good design and realistic expectations.
Aspects covered include:
1.Finding the best position for a food garden (including some designs)
2.Fixing factors that limit growth (shade, drainage, wind)
3.Water costs! Irrigation design, greywater, rainwater.
4.Protecting your garden (pets, children, pests).
5.Feeding the soil (soil as living layer, recycling, role of worms and other animals)
6.The human factor – you, your gardener, your nursery &/or food garden service.

The talk will be about 30 minutes beginning at 7 sharp, followed by questions and or/open discussion.
